West Palm Beach teenagers spent more than a year researching, creating and painting a mural in the Northwood neighborhood of West Palm Beach. The theme of “Healthy Choices” reflects different aspects of living a healthy life and was a collaborative effort of the teens in Planned Parenthood’s “Teen Time” program and the residents and business owners in the neighborhood. Artist and coordinator, Pat Parry worked closely with the group of boys and girls to direct them through the process that included not just the art work process but going through the various city departments to bring the mural from canvas to the side of the historic building on Broadway avenue and Northwood. The project was just one of the 2009 Quantum Neighborhood grants aimed at improving the health of the neighborhood through grassroots and innovative community projects within the boundaries of 45th Street to the north, Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard to the south, Flagler Drive to the east, and Australian Avenue to the west. The teens also worked on a documentary that shows the steps it took for their vision to become a reality. The documentary will be shared with other teenagers and community groups in hopes of inspiring other young adults to make more healthy choices.
